The Work of Shayna Karuman

Creative Writing Portfolio

Throughout my exploration of visual cultures and languages, we have completed many assignments relating to the consumption of media and its changing presence and ability to remold storytelling and ideas. Several writings completed through the semester describe this theme through examples of different media and their own messages. We start with our own artist statements then a photo essay about downtown living and concludes with a video remix project on women in architecture.

Remix Project: Women In Architecture

Women in Architecture is a compilation of different media sources that builds the argument that states that there are not enough women in architecture today. The video has footage of NDSU architecture students which include women to strengthen to convey the strength in collaboration across genders. This footage is meant to contrast the opening clip which acts as an introduction to the concern of disparity between men and women within the practice. This approach of introducing the problem followed by a solution acts to build logical appeal as we approach the question from both sides.  There is only this summary of the gender gap in architecture without discussing equal pay or any specifics of the profession. Comparing the various statistics and studies providing a lack of women in architecture to footage of actual women in architecture schools makes for an interesting collage of hope. This method of argument is discussed in the book Spreadable Media by Henry Jenkins “ companies do not ‘create’ brand communities rather they ‘court’ existing communities whose broad interest predisposes them towards the kind of consideration the company seeks to facilitate” ( Jenkins, 2013). The footage displaying hope for women consists of footage experiences women have had through their careers with no audio while I work on projects with men working alongside me or even some footage of me working alone. A remix project includes arguments through different sources which I provide as TEDx talks and youtube videos such as " Women in Architecture: Women's Leadership Summit" by AIA National.

Design philosophy: An Architecture Students Design Philosophy

A Design Philosophy's purpose is to share with an audience the intent of a creator. In my Design philosophy, I discuss my observations of what architecture is as a student and reflect on how I expect my attitudes and priorities to grow. My focus on this is to share my focus on environmental issues and solutions that can be met through architecture. This goal is my quick statement which is followed by my full philosophy and core ideals of design should be purposeful and in consideration of the " past present and future demands".  The sunset photo in the background ties together my descriptive statement with a serene and hopeful tone of nature and time lost and gained. The white text directly above this photo mirror the contrast between many words that describe architecture such as " Form" and " Function". In addition by highlighting certain keywords in the philosophy, I am able to draw in the audience's attention and establish the main ideas.

Photo Essay: Living in Downtown Fargo

In the format of a powerpoint, My photo essay delivers the argument that downtown Fargo is a safe and enjoyable neighborhood full of life. I gathered a list of people who live downtown and interviewed them with similar questions and photographed them in their homes which all reside downtown. Each slide has the interviewee's name stated first then a picture of them paired with their favorite places downtown and a few facts to do with their experiences downtown and thoughts about safety. Sharing the ideas presented in the book the Media is the Massage of how humans communicate and consume messages. A photo essay, although it may not state statistical data about safety and number of visitors, may convey as strong of a message as a research study. This is due to humans' pathos appeal of sympathizing and processing messages through their emotions. In the photo essay, the pictures show the residence happy and comfortable within their downtown habitat which supports my statements and does not require much elaboration.

Photo Essay

Changes that I made to my Photo Essay include both grammatical and structural errors and adding photos that strengthen the overall argument. In one of my interviews, I added the subject's favorite spot downtown in order to keep the question-answer style cohesive. I also added more images of downtown being used for public events to show community engagement rather than just a few people who live there to enhance that it is a safe and enjoyable place. On the second slide, I adjusted the text to make it more readable.

Home: About Me

Both licensed architects and architecture students share truths that have lasted for generations of builders alike, to instill purpose and strong relationships in spaces through form and functionality. Through my professional and educational career, I will explore what design means to me and will begin to understand how architecture will shape and respond to the needs of man and nature alike.

The philosophy involved in my architectural career revolves around strong relationships between man and his or her environment. As an architect, we design not only around the functional needs of a building, to supply safety security and shelter, but challenge ourselves with the idea of purpose through design. When organizing spaces, it is important to consider cultural practices from your typical white fence neighborhood to a million employee corporation. Consideration of the population is synonymous with the observation of past, present, and future demands. The anticipation of the environmental and social needs require comfort and appreciation for change. With this change comes the demand for sustainable practices to ensure future generations' success. Climate change and lack of resources restrict the privileges of an artist to express, however, architecture has a unique ability to inspire a passive lifestyle for humans on earth.
